FormulaSimplified ratio = a ÷ gcd(a,b) : b ÷ gcd(a,b).
Both terms are divided by their greatest common divisor, preserving the same proportion with the smallest whole-number terms.
Worked example
24:36 divides by 12 to become 2:3.
